Zero tolerance would imply that any detectable generic E. coli is unacceptable, which isn’t how SPC-based monitoring operates since the goal is to identify when the process goes out of control, not to condemn every positive result. Averaging all results over a year hides day-to-day variation and excursions, making it harder to spot problems as they occur. The regulatory performance criteria (m/M) refer to specific decision thresholds used in other contexts and aren’t the standard method for analyzing ongoing sponging results in this setting.
